Pathfinder International Tanzania, the health lead for the Tuungane project in the Mahale Mountains Naitonal Park region in Western Tanzaia, has been working tirelessly for the last three years to reduce stockouts in the regional health clinics. In coordination with the district reproductive and child coordinator and the district pharmacist, Pathfinder International is supporting the zonal medical stores department to reduce stockouts of reproductive health supplies.

Pathfinder’s Dr. Ernest Athumani health advisor has been talking to district level officerds to increase staffing, and has mobilized resources to pay for transportation and distribution costs to support commodity security. Pathfinder staff visit to health centers to check for stockouts each month and then conveys the situation to the district. Pathfinder has supported re-distribution efforts to move commodities from an overstocked facility to a stocked out facility.

Pathfinder International, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Frankfurt Zoological Society is implementing the Tuugane project. Pathfinder reports, “In some villages, family planning was not a priority until the project arrived. When we trained the community-based distributors to conduct house to house visits, they raised the demand and the number of new FP acceptors started increasing. All this has to be done via boats as there are no roads connecting many of the villages. There is no cellphone access and no electricity in the health centers and dispensaries".
